The Nectar of Transcendental Quarrels

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Nitaai Gaura Hari Naama Sankirtan ki Jaya! All glories to Swami Gaurangapada! All Glories to Shri Guru Parampara!

There are many wonderful pastimes of Lord Nityananda and Lord Gauranga. We should always drink the nectar of such unlimited pastimes. Specially Lord Nityananda Prabhu, intoxicated with love for Krishna, acted in a half-mad way, like avadhuta. Almost none could not understand His activities.

One day Lord Gauranga personally said to Lord Nityananda - "O, you are always restless and act in mischievous ways in Shrivase’s home. Please don’t act on such improper manner."

By hearing that Lord Nityananda remembered Lord Krishna in Vrindavana and replied to Lord Gauranga - "You are thinking that others are acting in a childish way because you are that Krishna Himself, always the restless cowherd boy of Vrindavana, Now you are talking that I am making some problems? You go to every home  and throw food stuffs like butter and yogurt everywhere,
This is the activity of madman and Your trick of depriving Me of eating my rice. Actually you don't want to feed Me and You are enjoying delicious foodstuffs by Yourself alone. "

The same transcendental quarreling that go on in Krishna-lila between Lord Balarama and Lord Krishna,  also go on between Lord Nityananda and Lord Gauranga.

By hearing the words of Lord Nityananda, Gaurasundara replied that if Nityananda is dishonored in anyway by anyone because of his restless activities, then He  will feel very embarrassed. Therefore He wanted to teach Nityananda some proper manners.

Lord Nityananda joyfully answered to Lord Gauranga that He is restless in divine love! - and immediately started to laugh very loudly.

Lord Gauranga wanted to 'teach Lord Nityananda proper manners', because once, being intoxicated with pure love, Lord Nityananda Prabhu removed His clothing dress and tied it on His head and on that way that He became totally naked. He started to laugh very loudly and jump here and there. Then he started to roll on the ground, roaring like a lion in transcedental ecstasy, withouth any cloths.

Then Lord Gauranga called out ‘Oh, what are you doing Nitai! What are You doing Nitai! This is not proper behaviour! Just a few moments ago You said    that You are not mad but now you are contradicting Your own words!" Only Lord Gauranga was able to control Lord Nityananda Prabhu who was always emerged into pure ecstasy of divine madness.

What a wonderful scene to see the two Lords, Nityananda-Balarama and Gauranga-Krishna in this transcendental quarrel. Let us always drink the nectar of the sublime divine pastimes of Lord Nityananda and Lord Gauranga.

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

Lord Gaurachandra-the Giver of Pure Love

ananda-lilamaya-vigrahaya
hemabha-divyach-chavi-sundaraya
tasmai maha-prema-rasa-pradaya
caitanya-chandraya namo namas te

Shri Chaitanya Chandramrta, verse 11

"Obeisances unto Him, Sri Caitanya-chandra, the giver of the mellow of the highest love of Godhead, who is the embodiment of blissful pastimes, and who is so beautiful, having a dazzling luster, like gold."

The beauty of Lord Chaitanya is so wonderful that it surpasses all mundane understandings and in His transcendental Form Lord is shining like millions of moons together. Thus, the Supreme Lord is in this verse addressed like Chaitanyachandra. The word chandra means - moon. That indicates that the Lord's beauty,as well as the unique quality of giving and sustaining devotees' life is just like a shining moon  giving nectar to the plants. Similar, by regular chanting of his Holy Name bhakti-lata, a plane of devotion may grow without any hindrances because insects and bugs of anarthas and aparadhas are fully neutralized by the shining rays of Chaitanyachandra.

His pastimes are unlimited and eternal, ever-expanding and fresh, and Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu is the embodiment of all such pastimes because He is Shri Shyamasundara, the  stealer of Radha's heart Himself.

The word maha-prema-rasa-pradaya is very significant in this verse. Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is the giver of the highest prema, the mellow of the highest love of Godhead. He is giving the  rarest crest jewel of devotion trough chanting of His Own Holy Name - Gauranga. That is one of the reasons why He is addressed in this verse as the giver of the highest prema.

Latest Issue of Krishna Kathamrita with lots of Puri Katha [A]

Guest
by @ 09:27. Filed under 3 Share Nectar | Top | End | 33 views | | | Reply

Gopal Jiu Publications is pleased to announce the release of issue #13 of Sri Krishna Kathamrita magazine, "The Most Merciful Lord".

Lord Jagannath in Puri is celebrated as Patita Pavana, the savior of the fallen. With new research work, traditional art, and translations of little-known Oriya scriptures, this issue of Sri Krishna Kathamrita looks at the history of the extraordinary kindness Patita Pavana Jagannath has shown on so-called "low-caste" devotees as well as those who are genuinely fallen. It also examines why, if Lord Jagannath is so merciful, the policy of his
temple in Puri is to bar entrance to foreigners and others.

Articles include:

* WHAT NO INCARNATION EVER GAVE BEFORE
His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada explains the amazing mercy of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu as described in the famous anarpita-carim cirat verse from Caitanya-caritamrita.

* THE ORIGIN OF THE DEITY OF PATITA PAVANA
Devotees and historians are unsure about the origin of this deity of Jagannath by himself who stands inside the gate of the temple in Puri. This article explores the stories of the most-cited versions, and in particular the account that he appeared for Ramachandra Dev II, the devotee king of Puri who was barred from the temple after being forced to convert to Islam.

* JAGANNATHA'S MUSLIM DEVOTEE: BHAKTA KAVI SALABEG
It's ironic that the person who is perhaps the most famous devotee of Jagannath in all of Orissa was denied entrance to Jagannath's temple due to his Muslim birth. The life and songs of Salabeg reveal the heart of a devotee, who, finding himself alone and bereft of anything else, piteously cried for the Lord.

* DASIA BAURI, JAGANNATH'S OUTCASTE DEVOTEE
Like Salabeg, Dasia Bauri was considered low-caste due to his birth and was denied entrance to the temple of Jagannath in Puri. Yet the extraordinary mercy Dasia received from the Lord has rarely been obtained by anyone in
this world.

* JAGANNATH'S MERCY ON AURANGZEB
The Muslim ruler Muhiuddin Muhammad Aurangzeb (1618-1707) is infamous in Indian history for his religious atrocities. Aurangzeb was a breaker of deities and temples. Yet, unknown to most people, he once had a vision of
Lord Jagannath, after which he donated some property to the Lord.

* PATITA PAVANA DARSHAN
Sri Srimad Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja gives an esoteric purport behind the darshan of the deity of Patita Pavana Jagannath.

* THE DAYANA FESTIVAL OF LORD JAGANNATH
This little-known festival takes place at the Jagannath Vallabha Gardens in Puri at midnight on the thirteenth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Chaitra. The ceremonial deities of Balaram and Krishna steal some bunches
of the sacred dayana plant, and the next morning are locked up in a room all day for their mischief. The article includes the story behind the event, as well as mantras, procedures, and rare photos from the festival in Puri.

* THE ORIYA POET DINA KRISHNA DAS
An introduction to the life of one of the most famous Gaudiya Vaishnava poets of Orissa.

* JAYA JAYA JAGANNATH!
A first-time translation done for this issue of Krishna Kathamrita of a popular song by Dina Krishna Das that is recited daily in the Jagannath temple in Puri.

* INJUNCTIONS REGARDING ENTRY
Another first-time translation, this article consists of excerpts from the Sanskrit sthala-purana known as Niladri-mahodaya. These verses are the standard followed in Puri regarding who should not be allowed inside of the temple, and the procedures that should be followed if somehow they enter.

* JAGANNATHA'S BRITISH "GUARDIAN"
Paradoxically, the formal policy of the Jagannath temple to not allow foreigners or outcaste people originated with a law enacted by British "foreigners". This article looks at the unusual story behind this policy.

* FAMOUSLY REFUSED
If one examines the history of the temple of Jagannath over the last few hundred years, they may be surprised to see who has been denied entrance, who has refused to go in, and who has been allowed.

* THE OPULENCE OF PURI
According to Gaudiya Vaishnava philosophy, knowledge of the Lord's power and opulence makes love shrink. For this reason, the followers of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu aspire for eternal service in Vrindavan and are not interested in the Lord's opulent abodes such as Dwarka and Vaikuntha. Also, there are two divisions of the Lord's holy names -- primary and secondary. The primary names describe the Lord's pastimes, while the names describing the Lord's relationship with the material world are secondary. The primary names lead to love of God, while the secondary names bring piety and liberation. "Jagannath" and "Patita Pavana" are secondary names, and Puri is a place of great opulence. Understanding this, why did Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who is in the mood of Srimati Radharani, come to Puri, and why did he address the Lord there as "Jagannath"?

* ONLY HINDUS ARE ALLOWED
This piece presents some surprising, and occasionally amusing, pastimes of Lord Jagannath involving the policy of barring entry into the temple. It includes first-time translations done especially for this issue from the Sanskrit sthala-purana Vamadev Samhita, describing what happens to Jagannath's wife Lakshmi when her husband leaves to visit his gopi girlfriends at Gundicha, Vrindavan. This article sheds a whole different perspective on the popular festival of Ratha-yatra.

Dear Guest, Thanks for posting this news. Great service. All articles look nice. I humbly do not agree with the statement that Jagannatha is a secondary name of the Lord in the context of Puri Dhaam lila. Jagannatha is the most esoteric and primary Name of the Lord called by His most primary associates like Shrimati Radha and the Gopies, as a complaint to the Lord. It means: "Even though You (Krishna) are the master and protector (Naatha) of the whole creation (Jagat), You have left us in the ocean of separation. Thus You are actually not protecting all the residents of Your own creation by leaving us." As rightly pointed out, the real glories of Puri are not by calling it as Dvaraka or Vaikuntha since it is the most concealed and confidential Vraja and Nadia.

Spiritual Life is an Inner Affair

Ishana Thakura dasa

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Nitaai Gaura Hari Naama Sankirtan ki Jaya! All glories to Swami Gaurangapada! All Glories to Shri Guru Parampara!

Nowadays, people  are very much interested  in the affairs of the modern world - politics, business, wars, economy. Millions of dollars are spent every year just to find solutions for various material problems of life. Almost the whole energy is thrown away to attain and maintain external accessories. In this way, humanity is not different than dogs - they  also invest all their energy in guarding teritory , finding what to eat and where to mate. The advancement of modern society is just an improvement of dog's society - we only bark louder and enjoy in more sophisticated things.

But we have something that is different - our inner life, spiritual inquiry about our position and the goal of life. That inquiry is not possible in lower life forms, only in this rare human form of life.

labdhva su-durlabham idam bahu-sambhavante
manushyam artha-dam anityam apiha dhirah
turnam yateta na pated anu-mrityu yavan
nihsreyasaya vishayah khalu sarvatah syat

Shrimad Bhagavatam  11.9.29

TRANSLATION

"After many, many births and deaths one achieves the rare human form of life, which, although temporary, affords one the opportunity to attain the highest perfection. Thus a sober human being should quickly endeavor for the ultimate perfection of life as long as his body, which is always subject to death, has not fallen down and died. After all, sense gratification is available even in the most abominable species of life, whereas Krishna consciousness is possible only for a human being."

Even demigods want to be born on this planet in human form of life to practice devotional service because on higher planetary systems there are too many material opulences and possibilities to enjoy, so that such enjoyment is an obstacle to real advancement - devotional service.

When a person starts to chant Nityananda, Gauranga and Hare Krishna, its whole perspective is changing toward inner life. Even the smallest things in the external surrounding immediately gets a different meaning and purpose and a whole new dimension is opening in one's heart.

We should use this opportunity, this rare human form of life to develop our inner taste for the Supreme Lord Gauranga-Krishna. That is the only thing that separates us from living like dogs, who are only eating, mating and barking.

Nitaai Yoga and Chanting The Name of Shri Radha

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Nitaai Gaura Hari Naama Sankirtan ki Jaya! All glories to Swami Gaurangapada! All Glories to Shri Guru Parampara!

There is no minimizing or neglecting of Srimati Radharani or Her Name in this process of chanting Nityananda, Gauranga and the Hare Krishna Mahamantra. Sometimes we may hear improper commentaries that we are somehow "neglecting" the service to Srimati Radharani and "overemphasizing" the service to Lord Nityananda.

That is a completely wrong conclusion since Lord Gauranga and Shri Shri Radha Krishna are the same, non-different Tattva. Our constant repetition of certain points is due to great necessity for people to understand and accept this Truths and actually this Nitaai Gaura Hari Naam Sankirtan is most pleasing to Shrimati Radhika, the Queen of Vrindavana.

We  understand that Gauranga Tattva is more merciful, especially to the conditioned and offensive souls as we are. Therefore we stress so much - " chant Nityananda, chant Gauranga!" Perfected souls receive the same mercy from Nitaai Gaura Naam and Hari Naam, but we are not on that platform.

We also understand that Radha Naam is extremely pleasing to Lord Krishna and that is why we chant Hare Krishna daily praying and meditating on Shrimati Radharani. In Maha Mantra, Hare is the direct Name of Radha, and we are trying to access  that realm via the mercy of Lord Nityananda.

Many neophyte devotees rush to jump into the most intimate pastimes of Shri Shri Radha Krishna but with lust in their hearts, so they  commit numerous  offenses  against the pure and elevated Radha Krishna Pastimes. To really enter this sweet activities of the Lord we must have proper qualification.

The safest method is to gradually approach Shri Shri Radha Krishna via the  Names, Pastimes, Associates and Abodes of Their Lordships Nityananda and Gauranga Mahaprabhu. That is the recommended process for those who want to attain service of the servants of Shri Shri Radha-Krishna and it is best utilized in the process of chanting Nityananda, Gauranga and the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra.

Chanting is Our Most Important Activity

Ishana Thakura dasa

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Nitaai Gaura Hari Naama Sankirtan ki Jaya! All glories to Swami Gaurangapada! All Glories to Shri Guru Parampara!

The chanting of Nityananda, Gauranga and Hare Krishna Maha Mantra is the central practice of our devotional service, the sum and substance of our spiritual life. It is a core activity, the life and soul of devotees which are always eager to spread transcendental glories of the Holy Name.

Chanting the Holy Names of the Lord is the central practice of any devotee who follows the footsteps of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu. Devotional service is an unlimited ocean of activities, so once Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya asked Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu which activity is the most important in the execution of devotional service?"

Lord Gauranga replied that the most important  process is that of chanting:

harer nama harer nama
harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva
nasty eva gatir anyatha

'In this age of quarrel and hypocrisy, the only means of deliverance is the chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord.
There is no other way. There is no other way. There is no other way'.

The Supreme Lord personally said that there is nothing more important then chanting . A person who really surrenders to this instruction will surely realize four transcendental mellows of devotional service. Chanting and hearing of the Holy Name are the essence of our spiritual life and advancement. All our other activities like Deity worship, cooking, visiting Holy Places are sustainable on the quality and quantity of our chanting. Our whole spiritual life and all activities are directly linked to the chanting process, our happiness, understanding of shastras, determination, power to preach and similar activities are directly dependant  solely upon the process of chanting.

There is no more  important activity,  nor will it ever be, than chanting the Holy Names of  Lord Gauranga-Krishna.

The Power of Ekadashi

Ishana Thakura dasa

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Nitaai Gaura Hari Naama Sankirtan ki Jaya! All glories to Swami Gaurangapada! All Glories to Shri Guru Parampara!

The holy day of Ekadashi is the mother of devotion. The main purpose of observing it is to please Lord Hari, externally by following different vows like no eating grains, and eternally by fully absorbing in chanting His Name and listening His Pastimes.

It is the direct order and wish of Lord Gauranga that His followers should follow Ekadashi, just as He said to His mother:

mata bale, -- tai diba, ya tumi magibe
prabhu kahe, -- ekadasite anna na khaibe

TRANSLATION

His mother replied, "My dear son, I will give You whatever You ask." Then the Lord said, "My dear mother, please do not eat grains on the Ekadashi day."
Chaitanya-Caritamrita (Adi-lila, 15.9.)

Lord Gauranga-Krishna gave us these special days to help us in the endless struggle in this miserable world.

samayasya maharogad duhkhinam sarva dehinam
ekadashim upavaso'yam nirmitam paramausadham

Hari-bhakti-vilasa 12.110.

"This Ekadashi day was created as the Supreme medicine to remove the disease of material world of having a miserable material body and mind."

Our decease is our material body and consciousness, whereby the power of Ekadashi is like a powerful antidote that instantly removes large quantities of poison. Observing the vow of Ekadashi is one of the major, principle limbs of devotional service described by Shrila Rupa Goswami.

Those who are eager to make advancement in spiritual life are advised to observe Ekadashi :

"To observe Ekadashi-vrata and Dvadasi-vrata means to please the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Those interested in advancing in Krishna consciousness must observe Ekadashi-vrata regularly."

from Shrila Prabhupada's Purport - Shrimad-Bhagavatam 9.4.29.

As per Hari Bhakti Vilasa 12.192 this process of observing Ekadashi has such enormous power that by observing it, a person attains the transcendental world:

ekadashi-vratam yas tu bhaktiman kurute narah
sarva papa vinirmuktah sa visnor yat mandiram

"Any person who observes an Ekadashi fast with devotion becomes free from all difficulties and sins and after becoming purified, attains the abode of Lord Vishnu."

One important name of Ekadashi is Harivasara, which indicates that the main purpose of observing the day of Ekadashi is to satisfy Lord Hari. Devotees of Lord Gauranga-Krishna are becoming  jubilant on the Ekadashi day by drinking the nectar of His Holy Names and listening about His pastimes in Navadvipa or Vrindavana. We may satisfy Lord Gauranga-Krishna the most, if we spent Ekadashi days fully fasting absorbed in chanting Nityananda, Gauranga and Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.

Use Your Time to Chant Nityananda, Gauranga and Hare Krishna

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Nitaai Gaura Hari Naama Sankirtan ki Jaya! All glories to Swami Gaurangapada! All Glories to Shri Guru Parampara!

Time is the most precious resource that we have. In Bhagavad Gita Lord Shri Krishna is saying  I am that time, I am that time that destroys everything.

sri-bhagavan uvaca
kalo 'smi loka-ksaya-krt pravrddho
lokan samahartum iha pravrttah
rte 'pi tvam na bhavisyanti sarve
ye 'vasthitah pratyanikesu yodhah

Bhagavad Gita 11.32.

TRANSLATION

"The Blessed Lord said: Time I am, destroyer of the worlds, and I have come to engage all people. With the exception of you [the Pandavas], all the soldiers here on both sides will be slain."

Every second, every moment is precious and we must try to organize our activities so that we may advance in spiritual life and attain the goal of this life.

Many persons today are asking what is the best utilization of time?  What is the goal of life? The answer is - prema-pumartho mahan - the goal of human form of life is to attain prema, love for the Supreme Lord. That is the goal of our life. If we can not find some time for activities that will lead us toward this goal, we must understand that we are simply wasting our time. And time Is Lord Krishna, as He confirmed in Bhagavad Gita.

Each and every moment is a precious gift because in that moment we may remember, chant, sing or worship the Supreme Lord. It is a gift for our benefit. This human form of life is so short, like a blink of the eye.We never know when death will come. It is inevitable - we will all be forced to leave our bodies. Only persons under the influence of maya, the illusory energy thinks that they may arrange our lives perfectly and live happily ever after. That is an utopia. Like a mirage in the desert. Almost every person is running toward an imaginative water in the desert but the result is only suffering of unlimited thirst.

The best usage of time is chanting Nityananda,Gauranga Hare Krsna and even a moment spent in kirtana or japa is nonparallel to any other activity. Shrila Prabhupada said -"If you have some time chant Hare Krishna".We should practically apply that. If we have some time let us chant Nityananda, Gauranga Hare Krishna and in that way we will attain the goal of live - pure love for the Supreme Lord.

No Difficulties in Chanting Nitaai and Gaura Naam

Ishana Thakura dasa

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Nitaai Gaura Hari Naama Sankirtan ki Jaya! All glories to Swami Gaurangapada! All Glories to Shri Guru Parampara!

The greatest difficulty in attaining pure love for God in the spiritual process is overcoming the anarthas and offenses. Even in the process of chanting Hare Krsna Maha Mantra there are great difficulties in the form of  Naama aparadhas or offenses to the Holy Name. So for an ordinary person attaining pure chanting of solely Hare Krishna Maha Mantra is almost an impossible task.

"If you simply chant Nitai-Gaura (Nityaananda Gauraanga) and dance, then you'll become happy. There is no difficulty. There is no difficulty."

(Shrila Prabhupada, Baltimore, July 7, 1976)

One who chants the Holy Names of Nityananda and Gauranga instantly awakens his or her dormant pure love for Lord Krishna, surpassing  mountains of offenses and anarthas. Shrila Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada is saying that if a person  simply chants Nityananda and Gauranga, without any difficulty, he or she will become happy.

This statement of Shrila Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada has the same meaning like:

gauranga-nama na laiya, yei krishna bhaje giya; sei krishna bahu kale paya.
gauranga-nama laya jei, sadya krishna paya sei; aparadha nahi rahe taya.

"If someone endeavors to worship Krishna without regularly chanting the name of Lord Gauranga, then he or she will achieve Krishna only after a very prolonged period of time. But if someone takes shelter of the names of Lord Gauranga, he or she will achieve Krishna very soon because his offenses will  immediately cease to exist."

That is the reason why Shrila Prabhupada said in this statement that there is no difficulty in chanting Nitaai and Gaura Naam.

The Most Important Instruction of Lord Nityananda

Ishana Thakura dasa
by @ 20:14. Filed under 7 NG Naam | Top | End | 23 views | | | Reply

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Nitaai Gaura Hari Naama Sankirtan ki Jaya! All glories to Swami Gaurangapada! All Glories to Shri Guru Parampara!

The Supreme Lord Nityananda Prabhu is constantly singing in great ecstasy:

bhaja gauranga kaha gauranga
laha gaurangera nama re;
ye jana gauranga bhaje sei amara prana re.

"Worship Gauranga, chant the Gauranga Mantraraja and take the Holy Name of Lord Gauranga. Those who will worship Lord Gauranga in this way by constantly chanting His name are veritably My life and soul and I will give them all protection."

With tears in His eyes, Lord Nityananda is giving  this most important instruction to the conditioned offensive souls. Lord Nityananda Prabhu is the Adi-guru, original spiritual master and He is therefore teaching us how to worship Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu.

One of the primary reasons for the appereance of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu was to taste the nectar and sweetness of Krishna lila and He was constantly overwhelmed with ecstasy of devotional service. But, at the same time, Lord Chaitanya wanted yo deliver all souls, so He ordered Nityananda Prabhu, to go to Bengal and deliver all by giving them divine love for Shrimati Radhika and Shri Krsna.

But instead, Lord Nityananda began to dance, chant and preach about Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu! Being the original guru, Lord Nityananda thought that it would be better for the offensive, fallen souls to worship Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and chant His Name Gauranga and in that way  automatically achieve krishna prema.

So, in this way he fulfilled the original instruction of Lord Gaurasundara and gave  divine love for Shri Shri Radha-Krishna easily attainable by chanting the Holy Name of Lord Gauranga.

Activities of Great Devotees are Great Misteries

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Nitaai Gaura Hari Naama Sankirtan ki Jaya! All glories to Swami Gaurangapada! All Glories to Shri Guru Parampara!

Activities of pure devotees are a great mystery for ordinary persons of all kind. Sometimes they might be  wondering - "What are those persons doing all day and night, we do not understand that. They are always occupied by chanting, reading , singing or writing. We do not know if we may trust them because in fact we do not know exactly what they are doing!?"

In the following verse of Hari-Bhakta-vilasa qualities and activities of such rare devotees and spiritual masters are described as follows:

krpa-sindhuh su-sampurnah
sarva-sattvopakarakah
nisprhah sarvatah siddhah
sarva-vidya-visaradah
sarva-samsaya-samchetta
'nalaso gurur ahrtah

"One who is an ocean of mercy, who is fulfilled in all respects, who has all good qualities, who works for the benefit of all souls, who is free from lust, who is perfect in all respects, who is well-versed in the scriptures, who knows the science of Krishna, who can remove all the doubts of his disciples, and who is always alert in the service of Krishna is known as a genuine guru. (Hari-bhakti-vilasa 1.45,46 quoted from Vishnu-smrti Vacana)

Actually to fully understand the activities of pure devotees we must somehow be on that platform, otherwise we will never understand their motives nor desires.

In Shri Sad-Gosvamyashtakam by Shrila Shrinivasa Acarya we may find the description of how Six Gosvamis used to engage in spiritual activities:

sankhya-purvaka-nama-gana-natibhih kalavasani-kritau
nidrahara-viharakadi-vijitau catyanta-dinau ca yau
radha-krishna-guna-smriter madhurimanandena sammohitau
vande rupa-sanatanau raghu-yugau shri-jiva-gopalakau (6)

"I worship the Six Gosvamis, who passed all their time in chanting the holy names, singing songs, and offering dandavat-pranama, thereby humbly fulfilling their vow to complete a fixed number daily. In this way they utilized their valuable lives and conquered over eating and sleeping. Always seeing themselves as completely worthless, they became enchanted in divine rapture by remembering Shri Radha-Krishna’s sweet qualities."

That example we should try to follow, according to ones capacity, not imitate, but engage in favorable devotional service, in vaishnava and guru seva, chanting Nityananda, Gauranga and Hare Krishna Maha Mantra and carefully studying vaishnava scriptures. Only via that service we will be able to understand the true activities of pure devotees.

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

Two Kinds of Persons- Krpanas and Mahatmas

Ishana Thakura dasa
by @ 19:59. Filed under 3 Share Nectar | Top | End | 3 views | | | Reply

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Nitaai Gaura Hari Naama Sankirtan ki Jaya! All glories to Swami Gaurangapada! All Glories to Shri Guru Parampara!

There are two kind of people - those extremly Self-oriented and the other extremely God-oriented. They are called krpanas and mahatmas.

The first ones are described in a song Bahaja hurei mana by Shrila Govinda dasa:

sita atapa bata barisana, e dina jamini jagi re,
biphale sevino krpana durajana,
capala sukha-laba lagi' re

"Day and night I remain without sleep, suffering the pains of heat and cold, wind and rain. In vain, simply for some insignificant, flickering happiness which can be lost at any moment, I have uselessly served wicked and miserly people (thieves interested only in their own happiness, opposed to my doing bhakti."

Actually this is the position of 99.99 percent of today's population - almost everybody is engaged in the service of some krpana. The word krpana means miser and durajana means crooked souls. Then who is engaged in the service of mahajanas, great devotees, mahatmas? Only few, rare souls are trying to serve devotees of the Lord.

Unfortunately in today's world there are numerous krpanas in the dress of mahatmas. That is sympthomatic for this age and it was predicted in the shastras.

But, Lord Shri Krishna in Bhagavad Gita is giving us a criteria upon which we may understand who is a real mahatma and who  not.

bahunam janmanam ante
jnanavan mam prapadyate
vasudevah sarvam iti
sa mahatma sudurlabhah

Bhagavad Gita 7.19.

TRANSLATION :

After many births and deaths, he who is actually in knowledge surrenders unto Me, knowing Me to be the cause of all causes and all that is. Such a great soul is very rare.

Servitude cannot be avoid nor changed, but what we can change is our object of service. We should serve mahatmas, devotees of the Lord and not serve krpanas, persons who are only interested in their own benefit. Western society is based on service of krpanas - the more one is selfish, forceful, the more one lies and steels, such a krpana person in society is considered  to be more successful.

On the other hand, varnashrama society was based on the service to the mahatmas, devotees of the Lord. If we change our service toward serving mahatmas, we will be eternally successful.

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

MY LORD IS NEAR ME

Shilpi Boral

7.12.2002

A little puppy went to play, far from its home,

It played, got hurt and cried in pain,

Its heart shaken with fear,

-The sunset is near.

It ran and ran,

Found its mother waiting outside,

It sat close to mother’s warm breast,

And dreamed “The Peace…” before sunset.

My Lord embraces me with love,

When my heart is in pain,

He, who is the strength of the weak,

He, who is the ray of light for the blind.

The world may try its best to give me pain,

But I don’t fear, for my Lord is near.

When I was kid.. I kinda used this logic to overcome my fear-of-the-darkness :) I knew if ghosts were around.. so was Lord Krishna.. and He was more powerful than any ghost :) Over the years.. understanding has developed and I have even stopped understanding things now ;) for its my Lord everywhere.. all pervading.. all one..

MY LORD IS THE ONLY ONE

Shilpi Boral

3.12.02

My Lord, You are one,

I can say my own,

You are only one-

Who never leaves me alone.

All the worldly affairs are false,

Some I see are traitors,

Then why did I make them my own?

And… left my ever long partner?

My own people parted from me,

When my life full of sorrow,

I was all alone,

When my drowsy eyes opened.

Eyes opened, found nobody near me,

Behind me, my only constant companion, my Lord!

MY LORD, I CAME LEAVING ALL

Shilpi Boral

16.1.03

Once had I claimed

To leave the entire world;

To break all bondages

For my Lord, only for You.

Today the day has come,

And I left everything

Along the path of life,

I come to You now.

Now You my only support

As You keep, I stay

Looking at You, Staring at You,

And Your name in my tongue.

But if You leave me, I die,

As the ant dies without the straw in stream.

WHO WAS HE?

Shilpi Boral

21.9.03

When my eyelids fell down,

Who was he calling my name,

I wonder in thoughts,

Who was he warning now and then?

He speaks to me, but I wonder,

He cares for me at the times of thunder,

Says many things, I know not what,

It was only my name that I heard.

Who was he,… who was he,

That I never see?

But he comes to me

When my eyelids fall down.

Is that my Lord who landed on earth,

To save me from the hands of devil?

Remembering Krishna…

Shilpi Boral

Jai Jagannath!

Parab bramha pida kubalayadalat phulla nayana

Nibasini niladrau nihita charana nanda sirasi

Rasa nandi radha sarasa gopura lingana sukha

Jagannatha swami nayana patha gami bhava tume

“He is the ornament on the head of Lord Brahma. His eyes are like blown petals of the Lotus. He resides on the Nilachala Hill. His lotus feet are placed on the heads of Anantadeva. Lord Jagannatha is overwhelmed by the mellows of Love and He becomes joyful in the embrace of Srimati Radharani, which is like a cool reservoir of nectar. May that image of Jagannatha Swami be the object of my vision.”

Does God really exist or is an imaginary element created by the mindsets of people? Who is He? Where does He reside? What does He like and what does He dislike? What is religion? Why do the philosophies of all religions conflict? Which is the greatest religion? …. Many such questions arise in the minds of people over ages. And many replies have been given by the wise men in volumes of work. Now these works also conflict many a times and create confusion, whom to follow and whom not. There have been many of the frauds in the disguise of wise men, sages and saints, who pompously preach about the Holy religion and God. And the innocent people get cheated by them repeatedly. One such example was Phalgu baba of Bengal, a tantric or black magician. This is the law of Kali Yuga.

Now what man should do? Among all the living species, it’s only the man who is given the intellectual power and wisdom to judge and decide the right path for him. And it’s also the man who is given the quality and opportunity to serve the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Hence he should be thankful before the Almighty supreme for His mercy bestowed upon him for the human birth.

All religions show the same path and their ultimate goal is to reach the abode of the Supreme Personality. And of course God is a person, who can think, eat, speak, hear and talk. This is said in almost all the religious scriptures. No doubt that all religions are directed to promote the principles of humanity in the mankind. To promote peace, kindness, love, and all the aspects of humanity, different scholars and philosophers tried to know God and spread the message of God in different places in different ways. Hence it’s useless to fight in the name of religion. The people who blindly fight for religion and caste don’t know that they are simply utilized and misguided by the politicians in the name of religion, region, caste and creed and rest all discriminations for their selfish nature and vote-bank politics. Aren’t they fools?

The oldest of the cultures and religious faith that exists in the world is that of Sanatan Dharma. The word Sanatan means which exists from the ages. And Dharma means that which we carry within ourselves. The word Hindu is a gift of the Persian invaders in India in 17th century, naming the people who lived across the river Sindhu (Indus), and now this word has taken the shape of a religious belief. A lot of discussions and debates are going on this topic. But what I intend is to put the clear picture of our belief which is preserved in the vedic sastras. There are endless discussions on these topics; however I would limit my topic of discussion up to the Vaishanvism cult.

“Brahmanas are considered to be the greatest among the men in material calculations. It is believed that due to their curse the ocean and sea water is salty. They are given the highest authority on vedic scriptures and what of kings, the demigods (devatas) also bow their heads before Brahmanas in their respect. However, in spiritual calculations, greater than brahmanas are the vaishnavas, who surrender at the Lotus feet of Lord Vishnu and are released from the cycles of birth and death. They have no boundations in their lives. They are free souls and enjoy their liberty. And anyone who ever surrenders before Lord Vishnu is a Vaishnava. Therefore, come and let us all surrender at the Lotus feet of Lord Vishnu and get released from the bondage of birth and death cycles.”---- Srila Bhakti Sidhhanta Saraswati Thakur spoke in a brahman sabha organized by the known brahman scholars of that age (20th century before independence) to decide who is greater among Brahmanas and vaishnavas.

Lord Jagannath is none other than Krsna, the Supreme personality of Godhead. It’s believed that Krsna appears in this form in the age of Kali. It’s only Krsna who resides in each and every corner of His creation, and can show this in His Vishwa Rupa. According to our shastras, a person can be God who has all these six qualities - sarva srestha yodhha (most strengthful brave), sarva srestha gyani (most knowledgeous), sarva srestha saundarya (most beautiful), sarva srestha vairagi (most unattached to the material world), sarva srestha dhani (most rich person), sarva srestha dayawan (most kind). And it’s only Krsna who qualifies these basic qualities of Supreme personality of Godhead. All of us have our eternal relationship with Krsna, on forgetting which we are send to this world of misery. Our ultimate aim of life is to reestablish this relationship with Krsna by serving Him honestly. Before that it’s important that we know Him perfectly with help of a qualified guru who knows Krsna, otherwise it would mean a blind guiding another blind and none reach the destination.  H.G. A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srilla Prabhupada, the Founder Acharya of ISKCON, comes from the direct guru-sishya parampara right from Krsna and Shree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu as a succession; and was a disciple of Srilla Bhakti Sidhhanta Saraswati Thakur. The life stories of gurus of this parampara are quite inspiring for the man of every age, whether youth, child, or old.

The vaishnavas follow four rules: no fish and meat eating, no gambling, no intoxication and no illicit sex practice. Besides these rules they chant 16 rounds of the great Hare Krsna Mahamantra daily as an order of their guru. According to Srilla Prabhupada, Krsna bhakti is easy for all those devotees who are sincere and determined, or else it’s very difficult. Hence among some thousands of people there is one or two who are knowledgeous, and among thousands of such knowledgeous persons there is lucky one or two who is actually a Krsna devotee who can reach Krsna.

If Krsna is the Supreme Personality, then what’s the role of other demi gods? Why do they exist? The role of demigods can be compared to that of the ministers in the government. Like each of the ministers, including the prime minister is assigned a particular job, authority and power, each of the demigods is assigned a particular responsibility for the running of the system. And they are not permitted to interfere in the responsibility of other demigods. Krsna authorizes them to help the people who approaches them, thus Krsna is the ultimate donor.

How to serve Krsna? Krsna likes innocent and loving hearts. He searches for love. No material gift can satisfy Him, but however He is happy with a single leaf, a single flower, a single fruit and some water given with pure love and devotion (bhakti and shradha). There are lot of examples spotted in Srimad Bhagwatam and other scriptures, whether it is of Vidur’s wife who fed her with the skin of banana throwing away the edible fruit, or it may be Draupadi’s single grain of rice, or it may be Sudama’s handful of broken rice grains, Sabri’s pre-tasted berries, the fruits of the Chandalini caste woman fruit seller, or the coconut fruit of Dasia (a low caste devotee)… such examples are in numerous. He accepts them with love and gifts heavily in return. The supreme personality, whom the sages mediate and take severe penance for ages long for His one glimpse, He plays and dances with the illiterate and innocent cowherd girls (gopis) of Vrindavan! So what’s the use of the heavy sastras if He is achieved so easily? Just by purifying our minds and hearts, just by surrendering before Him with true heart, just by loving Him, just leaving our sinful acts to please Him, He can be achieved. Salbeg, the reknowned bhakta poet of Orissa describes, “Dhenu pache pache bachha dhayen jehin pari, bhakata pachare shyama dhayen sehi pari.. eka to bhakata jeebana…” As the calf runs after its mother cow, Shyama (krsna) runs after His devotees as they are His only life.

If one starts to describe Krsna and His qualities, it would be endless. However let’s be restricted up to the refreshing of our forgotten tradition and culture. In today’s date lot of political and social discussions arise on the topic of caste discrimination and reservations. Some people even use slangs for our rich heritage and tradition and claim that there were a lot of caste discrimination done by our ancestors and even our scriptures support it. But I would like to say that there are many of Krsna devotees who belonged to lowest of the known castes and He did never discriminate on the basis of caste. He took birth in the Yadava family, which is considered today to be OBC, and was brought up in Nanda Raya’s village, where there were a lot of His friends belonging to low caste, who were His most dear. Krsna doesn’t promote discrimination on the basis of caste and religion, not even He discriminate between a saintly person and a sinner. He only looks for pure love and that’s it. There are many examples of Krsna devotees who were Muslims or brought up by Muslim families, let it be Kabir, Ras Khan or Salbeg. Krsna’s doors are always open for all living entities irrespective of their species even, what to talk of human caste and creed! When He looks at any living entity, He sees His reflection in that entity, and a true vaishnava also sees His reflection in every living entity.

In this age of Kali all the ways to reach Him are involved with flaw. According to Shree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (incarnation of Krsna Himself), there is no difference in Krsna’s name and Krsna. Hence He recommends the chanting of the Holy name of Krsna.

“Harer naam harer naam harer naam eva kevalam

Kalyo nasteva nasteva nasteva gatir annyatha”

Let’s chant His Holy name and surrender ourselves and our sinful activities at the Lotus feet of Krsna. Hare Krsna!

The author is currently a Research Scholar at JNU, New Delhi, pursuing her Ph.D. in Physics. She is interested to work for the society and eradicate the hatred among the human beings and the dirty politics involving caste discrimination in the society.

A HEALING TOUCH OF LORD JAGANNATHA

Shilpi Boral

1.1.05

He comes, ya He comes,

Whenever the drops drop,

To listen the red heart cry,

To peep into the deep blue eye…

‘Smile’; tells His eyes,

Healing the wounded heart,

The unbearable pain melts,

With the warmth beneath His heart.

Sympathy, the treasure of all deeds,

Rare among the beloved ones,

The half opened eyes asks

Many unspoken words of…

He replies, “My heart cry with your cry,

My tears drop with your drop…”
