here is my question:
while chanting on beads should there not be any thoughts in mind, should we just listen to the holy names without having any thoughts, and if we have thoughts is it still not possible to hear the holy names?

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krishna! I understand your concerns. But what my own experience tells me is don't be so worried about all these technicalities. You just chant your japa audibly and that will take care of the rest. You will engage your tongue, mind and ears in chanting and it will be ok. Actually we don't have too many rules and dos and don'ts. Chanting is a practical thing and when you keep chanting you'll get the hang of all this. We recommend audible japa because it is a more complete engagement, second only to a kirtan.

In the beginning there will be some fluctuations, but eventually all you have to do is take up your beads and that's enough to get you fully absorbed. It takes some time, but you can't master a violin in one day, can you. Actually japa is so much simpler and easy.

And PS try to make some kirtan daily if you can, it will boost your quality to a new level altogether.

Dear Indhupati,Srinathji gae wonderfull answer to your question, I would like to add few words.
Function of mind is to produce thoughts. By chanting Naam our thoughts becoming spiritualised. What is important is to chant and to hear, and by hearing Naam transforms our mind and hearth, and on that way our thoughts becoming filled with Lords activities, forms, lilas etc. I would humbly suggest for everyone to read as much as posiable, to grab Lords lila katha from Bhagavatam, Chaitanya Bhagavata etc. then while chanting, remembarance of Lord will came . Simply by chanting Nityananda sadhaka will remember - Oh my Lord Nitaai broke danda, Oh He is trowing rice on Advaita Acharya etc. On tha way mind is becoming filled with spiritual thoughts, and when sadhaka relish higher taste of naam and krsna katha, he or she will naturally go forward. On advanced stages of chanting, due to mercy of Nitaai and Gaura Naam thoughts become fixed on Lord and sadhaka realise that there is no difference between Naam and Supreme Lord.
